Purpose Statement / Position Summary
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Central Plants’ high pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, electric centrifugal water chillers, steam absorber water chiller, cooling towers, water softeners, medical air pumps, vacuum pumps, medical gas supply systems, generators, automatic transfer switches, transformers, air pumps and all associated system controls, piping, pumps and auxiliary equipment.

Job Specific Competencies

  • Relieve previous shift engineer according to policy.
  • Complete engineering plant rounds as required per shift and enter results on engineering logs.
  • Regenerate water softeners as required by water test results.
  • Respond promptly to Code Reds, Code 99’s and Disaster Codes.
  • Use various drills, saws and other hand and power tools using approved safety measures.
  • Maintain parts and material inventories. Complete and submit to immediate supervisor requisitions for replacement and/or repair parts.
  • Document all changes and activities in the Daily Journal.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and secure work environment following established procedures and safety regulations.
  • Report all violations, if not immediately correctable, to the immediate supervisor.
  • Comply with organizational wide and department specific policies and procedures.
  • Identify the locations of all main utility shut offs for building services inside/outside the Central Plant.
  • Schedule steam engineers to ensure coverage with minimal overtime.
  • Review all applicable logs, tests, maintenance records and inspections to ensure documentation is correct and compliant with manufacturer recommendations and Central Plant equipment regulations/authorities.
  • Maintain a sufficient inventory of repair parts and supplies to allow the proper maintenance of the Central Plant equipment.
  • Coordinate outside vendors and contractors to repair and maintain equipment.
  • Operate, maintain and repair the Central Steam Plant and associated equipment.
  • Perform various tests/inspections on boilers, safeties and controls.
  • Perform tests on industrial water systems including boilers, cooling towers, softeners and closed loop systems making necessary chemical adjustments to ensure developed standards are maintained.
  • Perform and document all assigned Corrective Work Orders and Preventive Maintenance actions.
  • Respond to work orders. Complete all requests and create/ensure a work order is written for the remaining work.
  • Attend monthly Department meetings, in-services/training classes and facility meetings, as required. 

Minimum Requirements / Work Experience

  • One to two years of formal training in mechanical or construction trades.
  • Four to five years of experience in boiler operations and associated systems and equipment in an industrial institutional environment.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Hospital experience preferred.

 

Education:     

  • City of L.A. 500 H.P. Steam License or higher preferred.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance (California minimum) preferred.
