Description
Shift/Time Zone: Morning/Day 5:00 am to 1:30 pm
State of Credentials Licenses Required:  NYS qualifications to Gross as well having histotech
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. degree in science
 
Requirements for Grossing.
- Chemical 6 credit hrs
 - Biology 6 credit hrs
 - 24 credit hrs mixture i.e biochemistry, organic chemistry, Microbiology, physiology etc
 - 3 months to 1 year Histology and/or surgical gross experience preferred
 - Meets all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures.
 - Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling; maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
 - Describe gross anatomic features of routine, uncomplicated surgical specimens, ensuring that all lesions, markings and sutures are mentioned.
 - Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistants.
 - Record measurements, weight, volume and any abnormal findings as applicable.
 - Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
 - May be trained to perform basic Histology functions (i.e., embedding, microtomy, routine and special stains) if personnel meet all requirements as outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Histotechnician SOP.
 - Complete all associated paperwork.
 - Follow the laboratory’s applicable procedures for job-related responsibilities.
 - Interact directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection/description activities, including defined specimen types that require direct supervision by a pathologist.
 - Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the histology supervisor/manager, technical supervisor, or director.
 - Ensure all corporate safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
 - Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
 - Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
 - Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications of a histotechnician.
- A histotechnician practicing in New York State shall possess a valid license issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as a certified histotechnician, if such license is required under Article 165 of the State Education Law.
 - A histotechnician practicing outside of New York State shall qualify provided the histotechnician possesses an equivalent license issued by the state or jurisdiction in which the laboratory is located, or meets one of the following requirements:
 - successful completion of a course of study that meets all academic requirements for an associate, or higher, degree in a histotechnician program from an accredited institution; or successful completion of a full course of study that meets all academic requirements for an associate's degree, or higher, in one of the chemical, physical or biological sciences from an accredited institution; and either one of the following conditions:
