Must-Have Skills

  • 3D Design & Modeling: Experience with 3D design modeling (NX preferred) and physical prototyping using 3D printing, CNC machining, and hands-on prototype building.
  • Manufacturing & Measurement Expertise: Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing methods (injection molding, casting, machining, 3D printing), GD&T, and 3D noncontact measurement techniques.
  • Process & Equipment Control: Strong command of statistical process control for process capability and equipment bring-up. 

 

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Opto-Mechanical Design & Engineering: Experience in opto-mechanical design, including head-mounted optics systems and component mounting/bonding.
  • Prototyping & DFM Coordination: Skilled in coordinating design for manufacturing (DFM) activities and setting up prototyping lines at contract manufacturing sites for consumer electronics.
  • Automation & Mass Production: Familiarity with automation equipment and processes for mass production in consumer electronics.
  • Testing, Data Analysis & Industry Experience: Proficient in electronics/mechanical system testing, data analysis/statistics, and brings
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical, optics, or mechatronics design for consumer electronics. 

 

Description

  • Client is actively developing the next generation of augmented Client products.
  • As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer contributing to the display and optics team, the individual will join a group responsible for transitioning novel concepts from initial prototyping through to high-volume mass production.
  • This role involves developing advanced technologies and designs and navigating evolving ecosystems to deliver differentiating capabilities across the company's hardware platforms.
  • The successful candidate will be a member of a team of engineers at the forefront of innovation for AR products.

 

Responsibilities

  • CAD design and drafting of small form-factor consumer electronic devices.
  • Thermal analysis using 1st principles and FEA.
  • RSS and Monte Carlo tolerance analysis of assemblies.
  • Coordinate prototyping and assist or lead assembly of lab fixtures.
  • Lead Mechanical Engineering activities within a cross-functional hardware team.
  • Execute modeling, building, testing, and refinement of AR products and prototypes.
  • Engage across the entire product development lifecycle, from concept inception to final product shipment.
  • Apply rigorous engineering principles and tolerance techniques to meet high-precision design requirements in areas such as Optics, Mechanics, and Motion Control.
  • Coordinate with manufacturers and cross-functional teams concerning Design for Manufacturing (DFM) activities, production ramp-up, and part and assembly qualification.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and 3D noncontact measurement methodologies.
  • Strong proficiency in statistical process control for assessing process capability and equipment commissioning.
  • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing methods (e.g., Injection Molding, Casting, Machining, 3D printing).
  • Experience conducting Root Sum of Squares (RSS) and/or Monte Carlo tolerance analysis.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in mechanical design for consumer electronics, optics, or mechatronics projects.
  • Experience with testing and analysis (e.g., Dynamic Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), or Ray Tracing).
  • Proficiency in 3D design modeling (NX and/or SolidWorks preferred) and physical prototyping.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in opto-mechanical design and engineering.
  • Prior experience coordinating DFM activities and establishing prototyping lines at contract manufacturing sites for consumer electronics.
  • Experience with the design and prototyping of head-mounted optics systems.
  • Knowledge of optics component mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bonding techniques.
  • Familiarity with automation equipment utilized for consumer electronics mass production.
  • Proficiency with testing mechanical and electronic systems, and the associated data analysis and statistics.
  • Seven or more years of experience working on Mechanical Engineering designs in consumer electronics, optics, or mechatronics.
