Description

100% in-office and lab work in NYC to include prototype assembly and rework, fixture development, and mechanical testing

Mechanical Engineer II - next-generation wearable technology (EMG-based wrist devices)

Summary:

  • At client, our work is at the forefront of new computing and human input technologies.
  • To develop this hardware, we require a Mechanical Engineer with rapid prototyping, fixture development, and mechanical testing experience to contribute to our program.
  • We seek someone with the curiosity to research and investigate the design and functionality of a new class of wearable technology, with a focus on electromyography (EMG) signal quality and skin-electrode contact optimization.
  • In this role, you will prototype and rework design concepts, generate fixture designs, make engineering drawings, execute testing, and analyze results.
  • The role is 100% in-office in NYC.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Research, design, develop, manufacture, and test wearable devices with a focus on rapid prototyping and device rework/repair
  • Design mechanical test fixtures for both subsystem and system-level characterization and generate testing procedures
  • Plan and execute Design of Experiments (DOEs) to evaluate key performance indicators for a wearable product
  • Execute mechanical testing to characterize hardware using both standard and custom testing procedures, including 3-point bend testing for band stiffness and environmental testing
  • Analyze test data against hardware specifications and contribute to the development of new KPI specs
  • Assist on device failure analysis and conduct root cause investigations
  • Provide 2D/3D CAD models of fixture and prototype concepts
  • 100% in-office and lab work in NYC to include prototype assembly and rework, fixture development, and mechanical testing

Required skills:

  • Creativity, verbal and written communication skills, analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Team player and detail oriented
  • Ability to make sketches, engineering drawings and common computations
  • Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization test systems
  • Previous experience with Siemens NX
  • Experience with mechanical test and inspection equipment such as Instron, microscopes, OMM, temperature and humidity chambers
  • Experience with prototyping equipment such as 3DP, laser cutter, heating elements, adhesives dispense/activation, soldering

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with wearable device assembly, including FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) handling
  • Experience working with load cells, tensiometers, or similar sensors for characterizing mechanical and biomechanical systems

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field required

Top 3 must-have HARD skills:

  • Mechanical design for consumer electronics (NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent parametric CAD)
  • Hands-on prototyping and fabrication (3D printing, CNC, fixture design, bench-level assembly and debug)
  • DFM experience with injection molding and/or sheet metal (tolerance stackups, GD&T, vendor drawing packages)

Good to have skills:

  • Experience with wearable devices or miniaturized assemblies
  • Familiarity with textile integration or flexible materials
  • Comfort with test fixture design and bench-level reliability testing
  • Working knowledge of thermal and structural FEA

Years of experience needed:

  • At least 3 years of experience.
  • Senior enough to own components independently but doesn't need to be a tech lead.

Typical Day in the Role:

  • Split between CAD work (design, drawing packages, tolerance analysis), hands-on prototyping (bench builds, debug, test fixture assembly), and cross-functional collaboration (EE, firmware, reliability, program). Expect to be in the lab 2-3 days a week working with physical hardware.
  • No remote work
