  • Standard and Peak Schedules: Outside of outage seasons, machinists work a standard day shift (6:00 AM to 2:30 PM), but during spring and fall outages, shifts may extend to 12 hours with 24/7 coverage, including night shifts from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Outage Season Timing: Outage seasons occur primarily in the spring and fall, with peak demand periods typically from September through November, requiring increased staffing and overtime.
  • Flexibility Expectations: Machinists are expected to be flexible with their schedules, accommodating shift changes and overtime as needed to meet operational demands.

Job Description:

  • A skilled tradesperson with 6+ years of experience who sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes and milling machines, to produce precision metal parts according to blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Responsibilities include reading designs, installing tools and workpieces, operating both manual and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, monitoring quality, performing routine maintenance, and inspecting finished parts for accuracy and defects.
  • Key skills for a machinist are strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, precision, and the ability to work with both manual and advanced machinery

Machinist Role Overview and Team Structure:

  • overview of the machinist role at client, describing the maintenance-focused nature of the work, the team structure, and the need for both independent and collaborative skills among machinists.
  • Maintenance Machining Focus: the machinist position is primarily maintenance machining, supporting power generation by handling equipment overhauls, manufacturing replacement parts, and general machining activities, rather than high production work.
  • Team Structure and Collaboration: The team consists of 8 to 10 machinists, split into shifts during peak periods, with a mix of junior and senior technicians; machinists are expected to work both collaboratively on projects and independently on specific tasks.
  • Shift Schedules and Coverage: The core shift is Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, but during outages or peak demand, the team operates on two shifts with 12-hour coverage, sometimes ramping up to 24/7 operations.
  • Onboarding and Team Integration: New machinists are expected to integrate into a high-performing, supportive team, participating in daily safety briefs and adapting to both team-based and independent work environments.

Required Skills, Experience, and Training for Machinists:

The essential qualifications for machinists, including proficiency in core machining operations, preferred journeyman-level certification, and the training provided upon onboarding.

  • Core Machining Skills: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in manual machining tasks such as operating engine lathes, milling machines, grinders, and CNC equipment, as well as precision measurement using micrometers and calipers.
  • Certification and Experience: While journeyman-level apprenticeship certification is preferred, candidates with at least five years of relevant machining experience are considered; a minimum of high school education is required.
  • Technical and Computer Skills: Experience with CAD/CAM software and CNC programming is considered a plus but not a requirement; basic computer skills are not mandatory for the role.
  • Onboarding and Safety Training: Upon hiring, machinists undergo two to three days of in-house and web-based training covering safety, environmental protocols, and equipment operation, with additional training for rigging and forklift operation as needed.
