Materials Lab Technician

This job is part of a special NO COST program by FloridaMakes and Rangam for direct hire full time employment with LightPath. This is a 12-month PAID apprenticeship. At the end of the 12 months, you will become a MSSC Certified Production Technician (CPT 4.0). This certificate proves you have mastered the four main parts of the job: Safety, Quality, Processes, and Maintenance.

  • We are currently looking for Material Lab Technicians to join our team in the Orlando, FL facility.
  •  The current opportunities are for alternate shifts which are a 9/80 work schedule and weekend schedule that include shift differentials.  We offer a professional, high-energy culture where employees are empowered to succeed.
  • This position produces infrared glass by batching raw materials, loading and unloading furnaces, working closely with management and engineering to continually improve processes and maintain deadlines.

Oversees glass production including:

  • Clean and dry ampoules
  • Cut and clean glass rods/plugs
  • Operate a glovebox (antechambers, etc.)
  • Batch raw materials according to the boule traveler
  • Operate vacuum pumps and vacuum ovens
  • Use a torch to seal the ampoules
  • Operate furnaces and transfer material between furnaces at high temperature
  • Keep track of inventory in the glovebox to be sure you have materials needed each day
  • Work closely with engineering on process improvements and new developments
  • Manage open work orders (issue and receive materials)
  • Document process parameters and results
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Special Authority:

  • Stop any nonconforming process(es) which may affect safety, poor quality or customer satisfaction
  • Report any halted nonconforming process(es) to production manager, quality department, and/or process engineer.

Qualifications

Knowledge, ability and skills:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage ongoing process requirements
  • Basic Excel spreadsheet skills for recording data.
  • Must be able to communicate with all levels of employees from the production floor
  • Regularly required to sit, talk and hear
  • Frequently required to walk or smell
  • Fast learner, driven problem solver.
  • Outgoing personality, professional demeanor with excellent work ethic.
  • Occasional standing, reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
  • Must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Occasional exposure to the following: work near moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation.
  • Able to work with moderate level of noise
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluently in English

Preferred:

  • Experience with calipers, balances, gloveboxes, and glassware.
  • Experience with hazardous material handling.

Experience/Qualifications:

Required

  • High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Must be authorized to work and reside in the US and must be eligible for any required authorizations from the U.S. Government to confirm with but not limited to U.S. export control regulations (ITAR), but not limited to U.S. export (ITAR) guidelines.

Preferred:

  • Fiber Optics Training and Certification or equivalent.
